“Why We Travel” Discussion answers

  1. Why do you travel? Do your reasons align with Iyer’s essay? Please explain.

1A. I travel to learn about new places and get the experience that you can’t get from TV, which is similar to what Iyer said, “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves.”

  1. Iyer says, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new places, but in seeing with new eyes.” What does this mean? How might this relate to you?

2A. What Iyer is saying that it is easy to go to new places and see them but a real voyage is to see it in wonder like it was just discovered for the first time and that is what we should do when we travel.

  1. Iyer says, “What gives value to travel is fear.” What does this mean? How might this relate to our journey?

3A. What Iyer is saying is the value of travel is not what to expect to happen but what we don’t expect to happen, when we travel it is the surprises that I am propable going to remember and the sights there.

  1. Iyer talks about a traveler being a human “carrier pigeon”, transporting ideas and culture from one society to another. Do you believe that travelers have a responsibility to share their knowledge and experience with all they visit and those they return to?

4A. I do believe that the sharing of ideas between society is one of the reason why traveling was created, to learn things we never knew before.

5A. My favorite quote is “For seeing without feeling can obviously be uncaring; while feeling without seeing can be blind.” It is my favorite quote because it tells you that when you travel you should not see the surroundings as well as feel the experience.

  1. Scott,
What you wrote was very insightful and well done, however I would like to see more! I think you could go into so much more depth on some of your answers. We really want this blog to be something you put a lot of work and all of your thoughts into. Also, your pics aren't working right now. I'm giving you a 3.5 out of 5 on this blog, but I will give you a point back if you fix the pics and let me know at class that you have done this.
